Alexco owns 100% of the historic Keno Hill Silver District in Yukon, Canada, and through its mining division is focused on returning the district to production. Between 1921 and 1988, the Keno Hill Silver District produced more than 217 million ounces of silver with average grades of 40.5 ounces per ton silver, 5.6% lead and 3.1% zinc. Effective January 1, 2011, the company declared commercial production to have been achieved at the Bellekeno mine, one of over 35 historically mined deposits in the district, and the first to be brought into production by Alexco. In addition to success at Bellekeno, Alexco is also continuing district-wide exploration to identify and advance additional deposits within the district as the Company progresses toward its objective of becoming a major domestic silver producer.
At the same time, through its Alexco Environmental Group (AEG) division, the Company operates an environmental consulting services business. Focused on mining and other industries, AEG services government and private sector clients in North and South America, providing management of regulatory and environmental permitting processes, environmental assessments and reclamation and closure planning. In addition, through certain patent rights allowed and pending as well as traditional technologies, AEG provides a wide range of water treatment solutions including the in-situ immobilization of metals in groundwater, soils, waste stacks and pit lakes.
With the Keno Hill Silver District as its core asset, one the highest grade silver districts in the world and located in a stable and established mining jurisdiction, Alexco is excellently positioned to continue its growth as Canada’s only primary silver producer. Leveraging the in-house expertise of its AEG division, Alexco is uniquely positioned to achieve its goal of building a silver production profile of 7 to 10 million ounces per year.
