Sandfire Resources is a leading Australian mining company which is set to join the ranks of international copper-gold producers during 2012 with the commissioning of its flagship DeGrussa copper-gold project, located 900km north-east of Perth in Western Australia.

Originally discovered in April 2009, DeGrussa has moved rapidly through resource delineation, project evaluation through to commencement of open pit and underground development in 2011.

First production of high-grade ore from the open pit and sulphide ore from the underground operations is scheduled for Q1 2012 with commissioning of the 1.5Mtpa concentrator scheduled for Q3 2012.

DeGrussa is forecast to produce 77,000tpa of payable copper metal and 36,000oz per annum of payable gold in its first three years of operations (FY 2013-15), generating robust revenues and cash flows that will underpin Sandfire’s strategy to continue to develop as a diversified international mining house.

The DeGrussa Project has a current mine life of 7+ years, based on the four lenses of high-grade VMS copper-gold mineralisation discovered to date, however the broader Doolgunna Project offers outstanding potential to discover additional lenses of mineralisation and further clusters of VMS deposits within a prospective 22km long strike length of the prospective Narracoota Volcanics.

Sandfire has an aggressive exploration commitment with a $20 million annual exploration budget – a significant portion of which is allocated towards copper-gold exploration at DeGrussa, with the balance spread across the Company’s portfolio of copper, lead-zinc, uranium, iron ore and manganese exploration projects in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Sandfire also holds a cornerstone 17.4 per cent stake in junior explorer Whinnen Resources (ASX: www), which is exploring and developing a portfolio of copper-gold and gold projects in northern Chile, South America.
