With the exception of late 2008 and early 2009, Australia’s natural resources sector has been growing at an unprecedented rate. Mineral exports in 2008 were worth A$129 billion, representing 57% of the country’s total merchandise exports (by value). This performance was underpinned by iron ore and coal, which were produced in record amounts.

The worldwide economic recession caused a subsequent reduction in exports, with base metals being particularly badly hit. However, with burgeoning demand again from Asia, it appears that the boom times are back. Indeed, the Reserve Bank of Australia predicted in February that the current mining boom could outlast those of the past.
